Built and rebuilt in the same place, the city is inhabited almost without interruption since at least 3000 BC. Omiros in his references, including Hliada, mentions its participation at the Troy War. The city flourished from 5th century BC. Significant factors in becoming an important city of antiquity was not only agriculture, shipbuilding and fishing, but also the wealth on the shores of an important shell, purple. The Ermioneans, with special treatment, produced the red colour, used by the kings, among them Alexander the Great, as for painting their tunics. Confirmation of their wealth are the findings of coins of silver and bronze depicting the goddess of agriculture Dimitra, dating to 550 BC. Its wealth also is confirmed by the existence of many music teachers, such as the great dithyramvist  Lasos, teacher of Pindaros.

During the Roman era has been a great bloom. The aqueduct, carrying water to diffuse into the rock cisterns is completed. Pausanias, who visited the city at 2nd AC century describes with admiration the rich temples, festivals, musicians and swimming races that gave her great splendor. Continuing her route in history, Ermioni was developed and influenced by the Byzantium.

At the Northeast side of the current City Hall, a large old Christian church was founded, with great mosaics, which points the existence of early Christian worship and its prevalence at the whole region. Fortified with walls constructed over the ruins of ancient buildings, it is appeared during the Frankish and takes the name “Castri”. After strong resistance is conquered by the Turkish. The city survives in othoman years thanks to its shipping and participates with a remarkable number of people of Ermioni in many battles of the liberty struggle.
